The film
Fifty years after the first step on the Moon, the series brings the Apollo program and its most iconic missions—Apollo 1, Apollo 8, Apollo 11, and Apollo 13—back to life through untold anecdotes and testimonies from the last scientists involved in the program. For total immersion, the program’s major milestones were reconstructed in a Bucharest studio: over 1,200 m² of lunar soil, the Eagle lunar module rebuilt to a height of six meters, and parts of its interior and the command and service module. In France, RMC Découverte aired a 90-minute version titled “Apollo, la face cachée de la Lune” (Apollo: The Dark Side of the Moon).
Behind the Scenes
The film was shot under the working title Apollo, The Ultimate Experience. In July 2018, over 1,200 m² of lunar soil were recreated in a 2,000 m² studio in Bucharest, involving around forty people and fifteen actors. The Eagle lunar module was rebuilt to a height of six meters, along with part of its interior and the command and service module.
Editing began in December 2018. The program’s major milestones, reconstructed in-studio, were filmed in 4K.
